VC Roughneck Shockwave

"If you chase perfection, you often catch excellence" ~ William Fowbie

When we bred INT CH, VC Sharp Shooters Man in Black, MH to VC Odessey's Hustlin Kate we hoped the magic of genetics would bless yet again. We must be living right because blessed we were with this glorious creature named SONIC. She embodies the best traits of her parents and we believe the breed as a whole.

Sonic is light a foot, super swift, and exceedingly graceful. Watching her nearly puts you in a trance. A friend says about Sonic, "Now that's a dog you HAVE to watch." I (Marilyn) often tell people she moves faster than I can think.

She is more stylish on her backs than most dogs are on point and the two are impossible to tell apart. As her photos demonstrate she is breathtaking when she's at work.

Sonic is able to focus her immense prey drive into whatever job she's performing and is an incredible team player. In addition, her conformation is nearly flawless and her dark brown eyes and sweet temperament can melt your soul. She’s one of the few dogs with an on/off switch as she’s a quiet, obedient and playful house dog.

We aren't normally the gushy type but when you own a dog this spectacular, it's tough not to shout it from the rooftops. If you've ever asked the two of us about our philosophy on dogs and breeding, you know our mantra is, "there is no perfect dog." While that is most certainly true, neither of us could tell you what we would change or improve in Sonic. We'll be thrilled if her progeny imitate the traits that are captured in this one special being.

While the name may give you the impression this “looker” is a princess… nothing could be further from the truth. Diva thinks life is best when experienced at the speed of light, and a little mud, snow, rain, and general ugly conditions won’t get in her way. That’s probably why Diva received two Prize II’s in Natural Ability. Both times she received a three in search… not too many puppies run too big and hunt too hard at five months of age. Like I said, not much of a princess.
When she was a pup, you could feel the amount of unbridled energy in Diva. While it proved to be annoying sometimes, her nonstop energy made her a quick speed in the training department. Diva was a natural retriever but we decided to force break her early to take the “edge” off. She had all of her obedience nailed by the time she was 10 months old. Even more impressive is that she was so cooperative that she maintained her prey drive throughout the process.
Her speed and grace in the field mirrors that of her father; and like Tango, she too is a “duck dog.” Birds are what Diva lives for and sometimes it seems that not much else matters, unless of course she’s snuggling with the kids in front of the TV.
Diva’s first litter with INT CH, VC Shooting Starrs Sharp Shooter, MH earned a NAVHDA Natural Ability AND a Utility Breeder Award in the same year, all before they were 20 months of age. Every puppy tested earned a Prize I in their Natural Ability and Utility tests, many handled by novices or first time NAVHDA members, and five are Versatile Champions. Her litter with INT CH, VC Sharp Shooters Hot Rod earned an NA Breeders Award by seven months of age.

INT CH, VC Sharp Shooters Fast As You
"Shelby" was appropriately named, however she quickly proved she's faster than all of us. This striking little dog has some of the finest qualities of her father Shooter. She is cooperative beyond belief in the field: turns when you do, comes when called, holds her points until you get there, retrieves to hand, etc., etc. She combines those attributes with those of her mother Jazz; a tough, tenacious, curious and incredibly intelligent dog. Not only is she faster than us, but all too often, she's proving she's smarter than us as well.
Shelby's first litter earned an NA Breeders Award.

VC Sharp Shooters Here 4TheParty, MH
"Gretchen" is the “social butterfly” that her name implies. Her playful nature was evident in the puppy box. She tormented her littermates with games of keep-away and quickly learned using them as ladders made for an easy escape route. Yet, when she tumbled out of the box in the middle of the night, she never cried for help but felt completely comfortable entertaining herself. Her devilish spirit was and is easy to be attracted to, not to mention she makes us laugh on a regular basis.
As an adult Gretchen hasn’t lost that spark, but she has grown into an honest and cooperative hunting buddy. She’s learned the ropes on the prairies and in the potholes of North and South Dakota and the ruffed grouse woods of Wisconsin. She’s equally comfortable in all places and when she’s at home she’ll still never pass up a game of tag or “rough and tumble” with the rest of her dog family. The party is always wherever Gretchen is!

VC Sharp Shooters Fifth Element
"Leeloo"
You are probably wondering where the name for this dog came from. If you are movie buffs like we are, you might recognize the correlation to the 1997 Bruce Willis movie, 'The Fifth Element'. The premise of the sci-fi movie is that the planet was protected by a weapon using the four classic elements (water, fire, earth and wind) to defeat alien invaders. They discover the weapon doesn't work without the Fifth Element, which is love. The female lead, played by Milla Jovovich, is revealed to be the Perfect Being named Leeloo who is representative of the ability to love, in spite of humanity's flaws. When love is combined with the elements of nature all can be conquered.

The canine Leeloo was the perfect match for her owner Sydney Lieffort and she hasn't failed to live up to her name yet.

Water--the element that gives Leeloo her confidence. She shows no hesitation or fear in new bodies of water...just excitement and wonder.

Fire--the spark in Leeloo's eye when she's working or playing, it's her immense work ethic--the fire in her belly.

Earth--The foundation of breeding and training are the core assets that make Leeloo an elite hunting dog.

Wind--The element of nature that helps Leeloo use her talents to their fullest.

Love--It's Leeloo's love for Sydney and to work that make this team a perfect one.

INT CH, VC Triple J’s Run Rainey Run, MH

Take a whole lot of desire, a little independence, along with the willingness to please and you have just described the stylish little dog we call "Rainey."
Triple J’s Run Rainey Run earned her Prize I, 201 point Utility score at two years of age with both enthusiasm and ease. A pairing between Shooter and Kelly’s Virginia Classic, 2x Prize I in Utility, produced this NAVHDA Natural Ability and Utility Breeder Award winning litter.
Rainey has a natural instinct to move through the ruffed grouse cover in Northern Wisconsin, and the North Dakota pheasant trips let Rainey show off her run, solid points and incredible desire and tenacity. A Real Natural! Rainey also displays a great affection for kids and is a joy to have at home.
Her first litter, sired by Sharp Shooters APC Algonquin, earned a NAVHDA Natural Ability Breeder Award, as did her second and third litters, sired by VC Sharp Shooters Time Bomb MH.

Chance's natural abilities exceeded all of our expectations. Her training was minimal, yet she achieved unusually high scores at a young age. Chance's desire to please complements her high energy level and makes for a biddable companion, both in the field and in the home.
Chance is a member of a NAVHDA Natural Ability Breeders Award and a Utility Breeders Award litter. All five pups were tested and received Prize I's in Natural Ability, receiving an average score of 109 points. Four became Utility dogs, two of which went on to become NAVHDA Versatile Champions (VC Sharp Shooter's Me-Oh-My Ty, MH and VC Sharp Shooter's Little Rascal, MH, CD).
Her litter with KS Orson vom Pottsiepen continued that success by achieving Natural Ability and Utility Breeder Awards. One went on to earn a Versatile Champion title. These dogs are as gifted as their parents and are some of the most conformationally pleasing dogs we've ever produced.

The breeding that produced Jazz was one that could only produce pups of high desire, intelligence and conformation. Her grandparents and father and mother (Sharp Shooters Corkpine Bid) are from versatile German and American championship stock as her impressive pedigree shows. Jazz is following their heritage by achieving a NAVHDA Natural Ability Prize I with a maximum score and a NAVHDA Utility Prize I, 201 points.
Jazz was the only female in her litter. Then, and ever since, she has proved she can play with the big boys. She’s shown high prey drive, love of the water and superior hunting instincts. Thus the reason for her registered name suffix, MD, which stands for Meat Dog.
Thankfully Jazz possesses the natural instincts to retrieve and honor, which made training her a breeze and contributed to many pleasurable and relaxing hunting trips. Her desire to please is only exceeded by her love to hunt. Jazz has a medium range field search but has adapted exceptionally well to the grouse woods of Michigan, CRP land while on a pheasant hunt in Iowa, the prairies of Montana where we sought out sharptail grouse and the potholes of Canada where she retrieved many downed ducks.
Jazz is equally content in our home and with children. Additionally, she took readily to motherhood. She is truly a versatile dog and one that any person would be proud to own.
Lance Vernam of Michigan is Jazz's owner and the co-breeder of her litters.

Sharp Shooters Chesapeake Joy MH

Joy is the product of INT CH VC Shooting Starr’s Sharp Shooter MH and VC Tess Von Klana Spirit, MH. These impressive parents passed on to Joy an intense desire to produce game yet an abundance of cooperation that has made her an excellent hunter of wild game, a calm house pet and a dog eager to learn each phase of the NAVHDA training and testing program.
Joy’s genetics supplied her with an intense point, natural backing, high desire, an uncanny ability to retrieve downed game and the spirit of cooperation that make her such a pleasure to hunt with.
Joy’s 112 NA score and her 201UT score are just a small indication of her abilities in the field and flooded timber. Joy lives to hunt. During the annual fall and spring migration of woodcock through my backyard Joy points well over 250 wild woodcock annually. Each year we take a week to hunt grouse, woodcock and pheasant in Pennsylvania, a week in Kansas pursuing quail, pheasant and prairie chickens, and then every remaining weekend in Maryland hunting quail, ducks or geese. Joy’s retrieval of downed wood ducks in the flooded timber and swamps is legendary. Joy’s stamina, desire, and cooperation carry her through these weeks of hunting seemingly effortlessly.

Tera was a true combination of her parent’s best qualities. She had her father’s amazing drive in the water, natural intelligence in true hunting situations and his adorable and affectionate nature. Match that with her mother’s grace and style on birds and you come up with an extremely well-rounded animal. Additionally, she inherited both of their sound body types and had good conformation.
Training came easy to Tera. Her water love was absolutely inherent as we didn't have to teach her water work, but only had to foster what came to her naturally. Tera’s love for retrieving was a true reflection of her father, Shooter. She was a medium range dog that was handled with ease. Her cooperative nature and "team player" attitude made her a joy to be around, both in the field and marsh, as well as in the house.
Tera was a Prize I Utility dog at two-and-a-half years of age. Her sister earned a UT Prize I, 204 points and another littermate received a Prize II, 200 points. These high scores make them part of a NAVHDA Utility Breeders Award with an average Utility score of 202 points. The same litter was also a recipient of a NAVHDA Natural Ability Breeders Award. Tera's puppies were show stoppers as she produced two Natural Ability Breeder Award litters, two Utility Breeder Award litters and three Versatile Champions.
We lost Tera on November 24th, 2007 while hunting in North Dakota. While we’ll never know for certain what caused her tragic death, our best speculation is a pnuemothorax from something she must have inhaled while hunting. Our only solace is she died doing what she loved most which was hunting with and for us.

VC Tess Von Klana Spirit, MH

Tess was blessed with an abundance of style and desire, two attributes that permeated her entire being. Her ability to find birds made her a showstopper since her first day of testing and competition.
In remembering Tess after her death, NAVHDA Judge Greg Wentz wrote the following about Tess' performance at her Natural Ability Test, "I will always remember Tess from a Bismarck test, when she leapt 20 feet over a creek and kept on hunting as if nothing unordinary had happened while we all stopped and stared in amazement... then we climbed down the bank, crossed the creek and clambered up the other side...90 seconds or so to do what she did in 1 second."
Tess was impeccable in the field, and her desire carried over to the water. Her energy was limitless as she never put forth less than 100%.
"What an incredible dog--what an incredible life. I still remember, as if it were yesterday, her ripping up every field and every slough...beautifully, like a ballet --she was truly an awesome work of art to watch," written by fellow hunting buddies and the owner of Tess' sister, Bronte, Ken Horner and Liz Dyer.
Tess raised four litters of outstanding pups. The first three sired by Shooter, and the fourth litter by VC Jacob Vd Westwind. Three of her litters became Natural Ability Breeder Award recipients and her first with Shooter is also a Utility Breeder Award recipient. Even more impressive is the fact that she produced four Versatile Champions. We thankfully own some of Tess'
four generations of offspring and grandchildren that will carry her legacy and genes into the future.
Tess was one of our primary hunting dogs until the end. She was the first to hit the ground and the last to jump into the trailer at the end of the day. She bagged thousands of birds while hunting, training, testing and guiding. We can only hope that her version of heaven includes prairies to the horizon, sharptail grouse, potholes and ducks, all in abundance. We will forever miss her spirit, her determination and her never ending love to hunt.
