Mandy of Thistlepatch
2x UT Prize I
6/25/90-4/17/05

Mandy was our first GSP and the reason we got hooked on the breed and NAVHDA. She had more heart than she had sense as she often pushed herself past normal limits. She broke ice to retrieve Canada geese, pursued a wounded Tundra swan for more than an hour in frigid water, and worked tirelessly on pheasants and sharptail grouse. Mandy was the matriarch of our home and tolerated the raising of a dozen puppies over her nearly 15 years of life. Her wise ways helped all of them develop into better companions and if they all learned just a tenth of what she knew about the crafty pheasant, she made them better hunting dogs too.
Mandy's tired old bones limited the hours she was able to spend afield in her final years but she never lost her love for life. Mandy accepted all our moods, even the bad ones, and found a way to brighten each day. As our dear friend Brian Casteleyn said upon her death, "never before has a dog been able to look so deeply into my soul."
Mandy was one special "Old Lady" and we will miss her dearly. We can only hope she is with her life-long pal and hunting partner Tess, who preceded her in death by just 13 days.

VC Sharp Shooters Spy Girl (Jinx) is anything but secretive about her prey drive and desire. She's more like a Sherman tank than a spy. She's tough, determined, focused and packed with talent. She's owned by Travis and Sue Bischof of New Richmond, WI. Travis trained and tested Jinx to Prize I's in NA and UT and her latest accomplishment, a Versatile Champion. She's the daughter of INT CH VC Sharp Shooters Prairie Dancer, MH and INT CH VC Nobelle's Holy Tera, MH.

INT CH, VC Sharp Shooters Lil Hottie "Foxie" is a natural when it comes to retrieving, tracking and locating game with ease as well as showing tremendous drive in the water locating downed ducks.  Briars, brush, water and snow are no deterrents to this girl.
Taking a cue from her sire, VC Sharp Shooters Time Bomb, MH and dam, Sharp Shooters Chesapeake Joy, MH, teamwork is job one.  Her ability to absorb and rebound from the ups and downs of training comes from her background of Versatile Champions, Master Hunters and Utility Prize I dogs.
You will find Foxie at home sneaking up on the couch to cuddle with either one of us or playing an endless game of fetch with the nearest object, whatever that may be.  Foxie's outgoing personality has made her our "social butterfly", always greeting and making friends with all those that come in contact with her.
Foxie was handled by Sydney Lieffert who obtained her International Show Title.

INT CH VC Sharp Shooter's Let 'er Rip could not have been more appropriately named. From the day he walked in the door, it was clear that we were in for quite a ride.
Rip is beautifully stylish on point, an intense, natural backer, athletic, and tough as nails. He will crash cattails all day long and has been known to come back from a retrieve with four paws full of burrs--never once having dropped the bird. His honesty and cooperation are constants. Package all of that with Rip's desire to please and you've got the perfect hunting companion. Sometimes Rip's exuberance has challenged our nerves, but when the pressure is on, he settles down to business and confidently completes every task we ask of him like a seasoned professional. His pleasing conformation is just icing on the cake--and oh, what a handsome head.
At home, Rip is a real lover-boy. He brightens every one of our days with his ability to find fun in everything he encounters... for Rip, "the glass is always half full".
Rip is from a Natural Ability Breeders Award Litter.

Sharp Shooters Here 4TheParty "Gretchen" is the “social butterfly” that her name implies. Her playful nature was evident in the puppy box. She tormented her littermates with games of keep-away and quickly learned using them as ladders made for an easy escape route. Yet, when she tumbled out of the box in the middle of the night, she never cried for help but felt completely comfortable entertaining herself. Her devilish spirit was and is easy to be attracted to, not to mention she makes us laugh on a regular basis.

As an adult Gretchen hasn’t lost that spark, but she has grown into an honest and cooperative hunting buddy. She’s learned the ropes on the prairies and in the potholes of North and South Dakota and the ruffed grouse woods of Wisconsin. She’s equally comfortable in all places and when she’s at home she’ll still never pass up a game of tag or “rough and tumble” with the rest of her dog family. The party is always wherever Gretchen is!

Tyja is a mirror image of her grandsire, Shooter, hence her registered name. Tyja’s sire is Ty, hence her call name. I chose to honor Sharp Shooters Kennel by naming this female after their first two stud dogs. Tyja has met, at a young age, the standard of excellence established by Sharp Shooter dogs.
Tyja is a high desire, talented and biddable hunting dog. She has an excellent nose, is stylish and intense on point, loves the water and is conformationally correct. Her combination of desire and cooperation, in just the right amounts, makes her a joy to train, hunt over and live with.
Tyja was fast to mature, accomplishing Utility level tasks at a Natural Ability age. She is a quick study, eager to learn and willing to give everything for her handler. She truly wants to please. Tyja is an agile athlete with medium range in the field, snappy retrieving skills and plenty of desire in the marsh. She is honest on game and a showstopper on point.
At home, she is an affectionate clown, forever glad to see you and truly a happy dog. In a nutshell, Tyja is easy to hunt with, look at and live with.

Wing Shot's Sharp Shooter II "Deuce" is a melding of his sire and dam’s best attributes: conformation, cooperation and style. In the field he’ll hold point until you get there - no matter how far out he is. He backs like he points, staunch and stylish. Strong, inherent traits from both Shooter & Jewel.
I see so much of his sire, Shooter, in Deuce it’s a bit scary at times. From the way he walks around the house, to lying on his dog bed, to hunting pheasants. His physical looks are what grabs your eye. Confidence is something he has plenty of. From day one he walked in our house like he’d been there all along.

My late father was a dog lover whose initials were APC. Albert Paul Casteleyn would be proud to have any dog named after him, let alone a dog of this caliber.
When you first meet Al, it quickly becomes evident that his presence commands attention. His confidence and picturesque conformation puts him one notch above the rest, or so he thinks.
Al’s talents are overabundant. When hunting behind this dog, you are awed by his tremendous speed and exuberance. There is no low-gear for Al, as it’s all or nothing. Although Al sometimes needs to re-huddle for a pep talk about what I like to call "teamwork," his overpowering prey drive makes him persevere when other dogs would have long before called it a day.
He has proved to be my most dependable dog for bagging ruffed grouse. When most dogs would be caught off-guard with a flush, Al would instead be pointing from a great distance, partly due to his outstanding nose but mostly because he quickly developed an uncanny knack for handling these wily birds. As for waterfowl, all I can say is, "Ducks Beware!"

"There never was a dog like Algonquin." ~ Dion Henderson

Jessica Lieffort accomplished a major feat in handling this tough little female through her first showing at the 2002 Invitational.  She is pictured here with VC Upwind's Basin (Sage) and her owner Jon Nysse of New Richmond, WI. Sage is the daughter of VC Shooting Starr's Sharp Shooter, MH.

Nobelles Tejas Chili Pepper
Pepper is fondly called the "Texas Jumpin' Bean." Her vertical lift proves that White Girls Can Jump. This little Texas girl, like her father, VC Sharp Shooters Me-Oh-My-Ty, MH greets every day with the sheer joy that she's alive and exhibits it with an amazing ability to jump straight up from a standing position. She meets every task, whether at work or play, with the same level of enthusiasm.
Pepper logs more miles on three species of quail each year than most dogs do in a lifetime. She routinely puts up 18-25 coveys per weekend on her owner Greg Irby's 35,000 acre lease. While her range is moderate, she moves with great agility and speed. And although Pepper is a young dog, she has the wit of a seasoned hunting dog. She is super stylish on point and backs naturally.

The breeding that produced Jazz was one that could only produce pups of high desire, intelligence and conformation. Her grandparents and father and mother (Sharp Shooters Corkpine Bid) are from versatile German and American championship stock as her impressive pedigree shows. Jazz is following their heritage by achieving a NAVHDA Natural Ability Prize I with a maximum score and a NAVHDA Utility Prize I, 201 points.
Jazz was the only female in her litter. Then, and ever since, she has proved she can play with the big boys. She’s shown high prey drive, love of the water and superior hunting instincts. Thus the reason for her registered name suffix, MD, which stands for Meat Dog.
Thankfully Jazz possesses the natural instincts to retrieve and honor, which made training her a breeze and contributed to many pleasurable and relaxing hunting trips. Her desire to please is only exceeded by her love to hunt. Jazz has a medium range field search but has adapted exceptionally well to the grouse woods of Michigan, CRP land while on a pheasant hunt in Iowa, the prairies of Montana where we sought out sharptail grouse and the potholes of Canada where she retrieved many downed ducks.
Jazz is equally content in our home and with children. Additionally, she took readily to motherhood. She is truly a versatile dog and one that any person would be proud to own.
Lance Vernam of Michigan is Jazz's owner and the co-breeder of her litters.

Sharp Shooters Chesapeake Joy MH

Joy is the product of INT CH VC Shooting Starr’s Sharp Shooter MH and VC Tess Von Klana Spirit, MH. These impressive parents passed on to Joy an intense desire to produce game yet an abundance of cooperation that has made her an excellent hunter of wild game, a calm house pet and a dog eager to learn each phase of the NAVHDA training and testing program.
Joy’s genetics supplied her with an intense point, natural backing, high desire, an uncanny ability to retrieve downed game and the spirit of cooperation that make her such a pleasure to hunt with.
Joy’s 112 NA score and her 201UT score are just a small indication of her abilities in the field and flooded timber. Joy lives to hunt. During the annual fall and spring migration of woodcock through my backyard Joy points well over 250 wild woodcock annually. Each year we take a week to hunt grouse, woodcock and pheasant in Pennsylvania, a week in Kansas pursuing quail, pheasant and prairie chickens, and then every remaining weekend in Maryland hunting quail, ducks or geese. Joy’s retrieval of downed wood ducks in the flooded timber and swamps is legendary. Joy’s stamina, desire, and cooperation carry her through these weeks of hunting seemingly effortlessly.

INT CH VC Sharp Shooters Wiley One, MH
Wiley's desire is on constant overdrive. His speed is fast; running far and wide. Sometimes Wiley's desire overrides his training, much like his mother, VC Tess von Klana Spirit, MH, but a quick reminder is all that is required to refresh his memory. Power, style and enthusiasm are his most prominent traits, with a bit of bedlam thrown in for good measure.
Along with being a very affectionate lap dog, Wiley's qualities include being a great duck dog, a natural. From day one, he searched like a pro with very little training. And he's a phenomenal pheasant dog. On our past hunting trips to Iowa, he has been our pheasant finding machine.

Hoss is a pleasure to hunt behind. He paces himself enabling him to hunt all day like his mother Sharp Shooters Annie Oakley, MH. Hoss is a true lover-boy and thrives on praise making our training sessions productive with little repetativeness. Retrieving came naturally to him; you'd think he was born with a bumper in his mouth.
Hoss inherited his father's, VC Sharp Shooters Prairie Dancer, MH, immense drive in the water. He has to be reminded that his enthusiastic ten foot leaps from the shore will not get him to the duck any quicker.
Hoss spends most days at his home with his owners, Kit and Linda Layland along with their girls, Maira and Georgina. The rest of his time is spent with Mark & Laura Picard of Take Aim Kennels who are responsible for his training. No matter who's house he is at, it's like he's been there all along.

Twister is all that his name implies - a whirlwind of excitement. Always searching like there's no tomorrow.  He'll get carried away and make a 300 yard cast forgetting that we are not "right behind him" and then with a quick glance over his shoulder, he will join up with us without hesitation. Like his parents, VC Sharp Shooters Prairie Dancer, MH and VC Sharp Shooters Annie Oakley, MH, Twister's backing came naturally and are as intense as his points. In the field, style and grace are his forte.
Twister's water search is equally as energetic as his field. In the blind, he patiently waits and  watches the sky and has been known to exit the blind a bit too quickly knocking over whatever or whomever is in his path. His determination is quite evident.
Twister made quick work of his short show career, achieving an International Champion title in three shows.
